Change of Character (CHoCH / MSS)

5 min read

If a Break of Structure says "trend continues," a Change of Character says "the trend may be over." It's your earliest reversal signal — and one of the most valuable reads in Smart Money Concepts.

Picture a downtrend: lower highs, lower lows. Price is quietly making lower lows... then suddenly it rallies and breaks the most recent lower high with force. That break against the prevailing trend is the CHoCH (also called a Market Structure Shift, MSS). The market's character just changed — sellers were in control, and now buyers have taken the wheel.

Change of Character — a break against the trend: the first reversal signal.

Why traders wait for it. Catching a reversal early is where the biggest R lives, but reversals are also where accounts go to die. The CHoCH is a rule: don't call a reversal on a feeling — wait for structure to actually break in the new direction, ideally on displacement.

The sequence you're hunting (the heart of an ICT reversal): price sweeps liquidity → a CHoCH prints on displacement → you enter on the retracement into a fresh point of interest. Miss the CHoCH and you're guessing. See it, and you have a defined trigger.
